The Old Town Hall is an icon of the Czech Republic, a national cultural monument, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a symbol of Prague’s history and the oldest institution of Czech self-government. At present, it serves the representative purposes of the capital of Prague. The oldest part of the complex consists of the southern wing with a beautiful tower, a bay chapel and a unique astronomical clock, where the twelve apostles appear on the hour (between 9 am and 11 pm) . The Gothic Revival eastern wing of the Town Hall was destroyed during the Prague Uprising on 8 May 1945 and was never rebuilt. The tour consists of the tower and historical interiors (chapel, state rooms and underground). The Old Town Hall is the first town hall ever built in Bohemia. It was established in 1338 as the seat of the Prague Old Town administration. In the course of the following centuries, events significant for Czech and European history took place within its walls. The current appearance of the town hall resulted from the joining of five medieval town houses. Its spiritual centre is the Gothic chapel dating from the 14th century. Another unique monument is the council hall, preserved in its 15th century form. The modern council hall is designed in Art Nouveau style. A unique visitor attraction is the Romanesque cellar from the 12th century, which served as a city dungeon in the Middle Ages. The Old Town Hall includes a 14th-century square tower, which was the highest landmark of the city in its time. The Old Town astronomical clock has been measuring time on the tower for more than 600 years. It is the oldest continuously operating clock in the world. The tower’s observation deck offers a unique panorama of the oldest parts of Prague. The Old Town Hall Tower is wheelchair accessible and a modern lift takes visitors up to the observation deck. The ground floor of the Town Hall houses the ticket office, a tourist information centre that provides customers with tourist information and official guide services, and a shop with sophisticated souvenirs designed by Prague artists.
